MOFETA is a type of volcanic exhalation, a cool discharge (with a temperature below 100°C), containing mainly carbon dioxide, without much water vapour.

In Poland, the phenomenon can be observed in the vicinity of Szczawnik, Tylicz and Złocki (Beskid Sądecki).

Mofeta in Tylicz is the largest in the Carpathian Mountains and consists of eleven interconnected circles. The circles - each about one metre in diameter and also about one metre deep - have a very large number of bubbles and gushes (about 50). An interesting fact is that the taste of the mineral water from each bite is different.

The mofetas were surrounded by circles in the 1950s in order to obtain carbon dioxide for the cultivation of algae used as food for animals, at least according to official sources, while unofficially it was an attempt to accumulate protein for the creation of food for cosmonauts. In the immediate vicinity of the mofeta one can still see ""terraces - pots"" in which algae were grown. The whole project was kept secret, so after the research was finished, the mofeta was buried.

The history of the site and a detailed description of the mofeta is presented on tablets, which are placed above the wooden "pier". . A bridge over the circles , and a gazebo with benches also add to the charm of the place.

Visiting the Tylicz Mofeta is possible on Tuesdays and Saturdays between 09.00am and 4.00pm

Mofeta named after Professor Henryk Świdziński in Złockie

It was discovered in 1938 by professor Henryk Świdziński - geologist of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow and that is why it bears his name.

Situated on the bottom of the stream, the outflow of carbon dioxide takes place partially under the water surface, which is why CO2 bubbles of various sizes can be easily observed. There are several mineral water springs in the area - the biggest one is called Bulgotka. There is also a single dry carbon dioxide exhalation - Dychawka. These names suggestively reflect their character, as the bursting bubbles emit hissing and bubbling sounds, and from the water-deprived Dychawka you can hear the "breath" of the earth.

The Mofeta in Złockie is the most efficient in Poland - in terms of the amount of gas produced.

Location: The mofeta is located on the border of the villages Jastrzębik and Złockie in Muszyna municipality. The information board and the parking place are located by the road itself. Steps and a bridge enable comfortable visiting this natural peculiarity.
